Interkultur International Choir Competition
Back In January 2023, Vhey contacted us and asked if we were interested in making trophies for the upcoming Interkultur International choir competition this April. Wow! Could we pull this off? They showed us an example of the type of thing they had commissioned before and we started to think that, yes, maybe we could, and hey let’s go for it!
Liz set about the compositions for the glass sails, using collage to create abstract designs from the International Flag signalling system.
Andy got to cutting, shaping, sanding and yet more sanding of the beautiful beech wood that represents the beaches of the Humber.
And Nadine came up to our studio in Little Weighton and got down to some serious glass making. Each a unique beautiful sail for the fleets of choirs heading to our shores… it really is all about teamwork!
A last minute call to Goldmsith Wieneke Rudolfj for the Copper Plaques, some nice boxes and recycled packaging and we were all done….Phew!
So, we contacted our amazing glass artist, the effervescent Nadine Storrer, artist Liz Dees (always a creative inspiration) and reached out to Andy Ellis, ex Rugby player and school teacher. We’d met him at a Christmas craft fair in North Newbald and were blown away by the quality and workmanship of his woodwork.
We met for coffee, threw some ideas around and came up with the basic concept of ships sailing across the seas down the Humber. Very Hanse, very Hull! We loved it and were excited to share it with the Vhey team… they loved it!
13 weeks and 10 trophies later (1 extra in case of breakages) and we found ourselves at the Gala Concert. Breath taking is the only word to describe this! Well done to all the contestants and everyone who joined in around the city with the event…safe journeys home!
